Jurassic Park – a decrepit Mongolian treat

Scroll down to content

Large grey dinosaurs greeted us as we rounded the corner. “Jurassic Park,” our guide snorted without further explanation and sped past.
Moons ago (technical term) dinosaurs roamed this area of Terelj National Park in Mongolia just an hour from the capital Ulaan Bataar. We were staying at Heaven Envoy ger camp 10 minutes walk down the road so made our way back the next day.
An elderly caretaker heard Jenny and me talking at the rusty main gate and strolled down from his small hut to meet us. We made the classic gestures indicating harmless but curious tourists and he invited us in with a drag on his cigarette and a sweep of his hand.
The grass field wound back up a small valley to some decrepit buildings abandoned in the holiday park’s failure. A dozen dinosaurs of various types dotted the field; fighting, grazing or tending their young. Despite their own signs of decay they looked majestically realistic.
A small herd of cattle wandered among them pausing occasionally to use the necks of smaller ‘saurs as scratching posts.
After half an hour the caretaker came to find us. We showed him our photos and laughed at the bond between the cattle and dinosaurs.  It was like they were meant to hang out together.
